Is the Megapixel Battle still raging?
With Nikons introduction of the D800, I have now begun to wonder if the megapixel race is still on. What will the new focus be for Canon & Nikon's base full frame cameras.
With Nikons introduction of the D800, I have now begun to wonder if the megapixel race is still on. When both Canon & Nikon introduced the D1x and D4, it seemed as if the focus would begin shifting to low light capabilities and clean output. Both of these cameras offered high speed shooting, stunning high ISO performance, respectable file sizes, and high dynamic range. Given this shift, I was expecting Nikon to continue this path with a 16 or 24MP D800. Instead, Nikon chose to drive a completely different route with a mind boggling 36MP sensor. If a market does exist for a camera of this caliber, I am surprised Nikon would bring it to a D800 body rather than a D4x or something of that nature for studio use. Canon is also likely to bring competition to the D800 with a 5D mark III or 5Dx in the coming months and it will be interesting to see if they follow Nikon’s lead or continue to drive low light performance in a less pixel packing sensor.
