Sony A7s Dual Video Mode - What is it and how does it work

Sequence_01.Still001b

One of Sony's new features in the A7s is the Dual Video Mode which allows separate recording of multiple files. What is it and how does it work? Head past the break for the full information.

Sony's A7s Dual Video mode allows dual recording of a high quality AVCHD file along side a lower quality MP4 file. The AVCHD recording in this test was a total of 62MB for a 24 second video while the MP4 file only came in at 9.1MB! That is a huge reduction in file size for those who might need quick upload to the internet or other streaming options.

To enable dual video recording, hit the menu button on your Sony A7s, and head to the main camera menu under column 2 to find the setting.

One of the great things about the dual video mode is that both files are recording. This is essentially like shooting RAW+JPEG on your still camera. Forgetting to disable it will hardly take up any more space on your card and still leave you with the high quality AVCHD recording. For some internet uploads, you may find the MP4 file quicker to edit, upload, and produce with hardly any noticeable quality difference. And for those who demand a higher quality option, the Sony A7s still maintains the original AVCHD file.
