Canon Announces EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II, 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and 28mm f/2.8 IS USM Lenses

Canon-New-Lenses-Feb-2012-640x426In an interesting move, Canon has brought 3 new lenses to market. While the anticipated 24-70mm f/2.8 II has been talked about for some time, the 24mm f/2.8 IS & 28mm f/2.8 IS were not. Many (including me) had hoped that the 24-70mm lens would come with IS as there is a shortage of non-telephoto full frame lenses with this feature. I find this particularly a weakness when trying to shoot video though there are several times I have desired IS even on wider indoor shots. Many have been satisfied with the original 24-70mm and I expect there to be significant improvements for Canon to warrant replacing it. This likely implies that a high megapixel camera may be on the horizon to require an improvement of this lens.

The 24mm IS and 28mm IS are very interesting designs. Their prices are similar though high at around $700 for a non-L prime lens. These maybe an asset to videographers with cropped body cameras. Other than that, I find it difficult to find an audience for these lenses. The Canon 16-35 f/2.8L or 17-40mm f/4L would be great alternatives with zoom & wide angle capabilities. As L lenses they also bring faster focusing and weather sealing if IS is not required.
