Save money on bag fees when flying with your gear

What started as a means of charging for excess luggage has quickly turned in to a new scheme for making revenue off of normal travelers. For those of us who carry equipment with us, the situation is even worse as we are forced to check at least one bag. Here is how to save on those baggage fees the next time you fly:

For many of us, traveling with cameras or other equipment can be an expensive proposition, especially with modern day hefty baggage fees to contend with when flying. These fees differ between airlines and can often exceed the price of the ticket, especially when flying round trip where the fees are added each time you step into a plane. When traveling on short trips, many of us have cleverly managed to shrink our positions into small cases to allow us to carry everything we need with us on the plane. However, when flying with cameras or other equipment, this is often impossible. Even when I have a small amount of luggage, keeping my camera equipment with me on the plane usually means my luggage had to be checked below. 

There is now a baggage fee calculator at www.howmuchtofly.com. This calculator allows you to input your estimations on how many bags you will be flying with, how much they weigh, and some other flight information to find out which airlines will charge you the most to fly. Using this, I was able to save over $100 by booking one airline over another. When I travel with my gear, I usually try to take as much as possible with me on the plane. This forces me to check my normal luggage and pay the costly fees associated with it. While this tool will not get rid of your baggage fees, it will help to determine which airlines are charging the most for the bags you are bringing.


As a bonus, there is also an in-flight service calculator that shows which airlines offer services such as wifi, and how much they charge for access. This is a huge help for those of us that work on the go.
