Finding the Light - The secret to great photographs

Grace Elisabeth Photography

Do You want to know the biggest secret in photography? I’m sure you know I am a gear lover, obsessed with new technology, and always want to test out what’s new. But in the end there is one thing that trumps it all. Head past the break for the full story.

The secret of all secrets? FIND THE LIGHT. That is it. Are you shooting with a Canon T2i? Find the light. Shooting with a 1DX? Find the light. Without the light, the drama of the photograph will completely be lost. Yes, the venue was great and absolutely, I was shooting with great gear in this case the Canon 5D Mark III & Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC (check out the review of this amazing lens here). However, I’ll be the first to admit that more importantly, it was the light that made the photograph.

Just in case you needed some extra proof, this photograph was taken at 1/80th of a second (you can hand hold a lens at that speed so no need for expensive tripods and stabilization), an aperture of f/5 that virtually every lens can achieve (and just about every lens is perfectly sharp by f/5), at ISO 400 and just about every Camera in the last 7+ years doesn’t show any grain at ISO 400. So yes, while my lens shoots at f/2.8, has stabilization, while my camera goes to 25,000 ISO natively, and while I have a carbon fiber tripod, if you find the light you could easily pull this off at with a Canon T2i, Nikon D3100, and the included kit lens.
